Inlays and Onlays

inlays and onlaysInlays and onlays are also known as partial crowns. They are needed to restore teeth that have decay, damage, cracks, chips or other minor problems that wouldn’t require a crown. At Designed Smiles in Brea, CA, we can provide inlays and onlays the same day through the use of our CEREC® machine. Like our dental crowns, your inlay or onlay will be made and placed the same day as your procedure. Inlays and onlays are a great way to save your tooth from further damage and prevent necessary extraction, that is one of their many benefits.

Inlays differ from onlays in the sense that inlays are a lot like fillings and only restore a small area of your tooth. Inlays are used on the cusps of your teeth—the ridged areas on the tops of your molars. When a small section starts to decay, it will be removed and then replaced with an inlay. Inlays are made using our CEREC machine in-office. Your dentist will use the 3D digital imaging technology to take pictures of your tooth after your procedure and then create your inlay using compressed porcelain that is colored to match your tooth. After the inlay has been made (within an hour), it will be bonded to your tooth using a special cement. The inlay will look completely natural and function just like your real tooth.

Onlaysinlays and onlays

Onlays are used when the decay is larger than one cusp of your tooth. Onlays are also used for cosmetic enhancement, fractured fillings, broken or fractured teeth, or for large fillings. Your dentist will prepare your tooth by removing any decay or old fillings that need replacing. Then, using CEREC technology, digital images will be taken of your tooth. Within an hour, your onlay will be created to match your tooth. The onlay is bonded to your tooth using a special cement for long lasting results.

Benefits of Inlays and Onlays

There are many benefits of receiving inlays and onlays. One of the most important, is that the health of your tooth is restored. Inlays and onlays restore your teeth more than a filling would and gives you more protection from food deposits and bacteria. Another benefit of inlays and onlays is that they provide cosmetic benefits. Inlays and onlays can restore what used to look like a damaged tooth back to what your natural tooth looks like. Old inlays and onlays were made out of silver amalgam which looked obvious, but today they are made out of porcelain to match your tooth. Another benefit is that they can last a long time, up to 30 years.
