These days, it is hard to imagine that not all that long ago, people who had crooked teeth or bite issues had to go through lengthy treatments that involved having a mouth full of metal wires, and sometimes even headgear that made you look something like Frankenstein’s monster, just waiting for Igor to throw the switch and bring you to life. Then, of course, once all that was over with, you had to deal with wearing a retainer for at least a year. We have come a long way – today, most dental issues can be corrected with far less extreme measures, so keep reading to find out if you could be a candidate for Invisalign clear braces.
The most common way of straightening teeth is still metal braces. You probably know what they look like, and you may even have worn them in your teen years. They are metal brackets that are fastened onto your teeth, and threaded with wires that pull your teeth into the desired position. Understand, please, that at Designed Smiles, we are not denigrating metal braces – they are still the most effective, least expensive way of correcting malocclusion.
That said, there are disadvantages – we are not all about doing things in the cheapest, most effective way. We understand that wearing metal braces can be embarrassing, and that is why we offer an alternative. If you find the idea of wearing metal braces repellent, you could be a candidate for Invisalign, and in fact, these clear braces do have advantages beyond the purely cosmetic.
If you love foods like corn on the cob, steak and taffy, or if you like to chew gum, you could be a candidate for Invisalign because these are all things you will have to forego if you choose metal braces. This is because metal braces cannot be removed. With Invisalign, though, when you want to eat, you simply take out the aligners. When you are done eating, clean your teeth and pop them back in. If you want a piece of gum, go for it.
Of course, the longer you wear your Invisalign clear braces, the more effective the treatment. So if you lack the discipline to chew your gum for just a few minutes, or if you are likely to forget to put the aligners back in, then you may not be a good candidate for Invisalign.
