Teeth Whitening
Many of our patients brush and floss as recommended, but still can’t avoid the stains and discoloration that come with normal wear and tear. Coffee and tobacco are especially troublesome but common causes of teeth stains and yellowing. To combat discoloration, many of our Brea and Fullerton area patients opt for our convenient teeth whitening procedure. Designed Smiles uses a special whitening gel that is applied to the teeth and activated by a low-energy light to achieve dramatically whiter teeth in about an hour. The teeth whitening procedure is very safe, though some patients report increased tooth sensitivity directly afterward, and the results are immediately apparent.
Designed Smiles also offers at-home teeth whitening. This process takes slightly longer than an in-office appointment, but patients can do it on their own time. It uses a similar whitening gel, applied over a longer period of time in a series of specially-designed trays. Although the process takes slightly more time, it achieves results similar to our in-office treatment and generally is less expensive.
The popularity of both in-office and at-home whitening treatments has expanded considerably in recent years, especially around the Brea and Fullerton area. Teeth whitening is increasingly becoming a routine procedure for many people, due to the limited amount of time required to achieve dramatic results.
Porcelain Veneers
Veneers are thin shells of porcelain placed on the front of teeth that can cover cracks and chips and give teeth a more desirable shape and better spacing. Dr. Burdick works with each patient to determine exactly how they would like their teeth to look, and he never does any permanent work without first making sure the patient understands, and likes, what is being done. Our porcelain veneers are custom-shaped for each patient, and because we use excellent materials, our porcelain veneers are durable enough to last for many years when cared for properly. Also, the porcelain reproduces the translucence of natural tooth enamel, so our veneers create the effect of a brilliant, completely natural smile.
The procedure starts with a consultation, and a detailed examination of the patient’s mouth. We then take digital photos of the patient’s teeth and create a three-dimensional picture of the patient’s mouth, to which we add the proposed porcelain veneers. This way the patient can see what the veneers will look like, and make any changes he or she wants. After the final shape of the veneers is settled upon, the veneers are shaped from blocks of porcelain and polished. Dr. Burdick then shaves a thin layer of the patient’s natural tooth enamel off to make room for the porcelain veneers and cements them into place. Though it may sound like many steps, we can usually perform the entire procedure in two visits to our Brea area office. Invisalign®
Our La Habra practice now offers Invisalign®, and straightening crooked teeth has never been so easy and unobtrusive. Invisalign® comprises a series of custom-molded, clear plastic aligners that gradually straighten teeth, without the sharp metal of traditional braces. They can be taken out for eating and cleaning, and they take approximately the same amount of time to straighten teeth as metal braces. Patients can still talk, smile and brush their teeth as they normally do, and still achieve the straight teeth they desire.
The staff of Designed Smiles first takes a mold of the patient’s teeth, and sends it, along with x-rays and photos of the patient's mouth, to the Invisalign® lab. They create a series of clear aligners, custom-made for each patient based on the information we send, and send them back to us. The patient wears each aligner for approximately two weeks, and then discards it for the next one in the series. With a great flexibility in the size and shape of the aligners, they can be fitted to almost any patient. Although some patients’ teeth may require longer to straighten, usually the entire process takes less than two years. Patients from our La Habra practice who have undergone the Invisalign® treatment tell us that the aligners are easy to live with, and nearly unnoticeable to others.
Tooth-colored Fillings
Although metal fillings are still considered effective, many patients prefer the aesthetics of tooth-colored fillings. Made of a blend of ceramics, tooth-colored fillings also require less healthy tooth material to be removed. They are as durable as metal fillings, but much less noticeable.
Smile Makeovers
Sometimes our patients need a combination of cosmetic and restorative procedures to achieve the smile they want. Designed Smiles works with each patient to determine the best course of treatment, and Dr. Grant Burdick has the skill and experience to integrate multiple dental procedures seamlessly. Though a complete smile makeover may require porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, Invisalign®, and possible multiple appointments, we have a history of achieving excellent results with this comprehensive and highly personalized approach. Many patients choose sedation dentistry when receiving a smile makeover, which allows for multiple procedures to be comfortably done in one appointment.
